Västerås has long been a hub for ice sailing and skatesailing, thanks to Mälaren’s wide frozen surfaces in winter. The city is also home to JKV, an active sailing club with a history in dinghy sailing, keelboat racing, and ice sailing. Västerås features a traditional inland sailing conditions: sheltered, but with open expanses of water. Lake Mälaren provides excellent conditions for course racing and slalom formats, as well as long-distance marathon ice sailing across wide frozen areas.
Västerås has hosted national and international ice sailing and winter sports events, supported by the city’s infrastructure and accessibility and even WISSA events before during the 1980s. Temperatures are on average just below zero in February and ice conditions are generally good as temperatures often go through 0 degrees Celsius up and down, the surface is often ice rather than snow, but could vary from water on ice to snow. SW is the dominant wind direction throughout the year.
The local Sailing club JKV can provide suitable facilities for the event.
